Have you ever opened up up a magazine and started reading the latest celebrity gossip, or eaten yummy, sweet candy. Have you ever thought where the words candy ormagazine comes from? are they Greek? Latin? Nope! Arabic. Yes arabic. When a country borrows the alphabet or words, its called loanwords. Here are some words that you might recognize thats English but its also is Arabic. Some of them might be indirect, like when a word goes through arabic and another language (usually Spanish)

Here are the words:

Cotton — قطن         “kutton”

Zero — صفر           “sifer”

Syrup sorbet  —  شرب   ” Shirb” ( means drink)

Sugar — سكر         ”Sukkar”

Monsoon—موسم    ” mawsim “( season)

Lemon —  ليمون     ” lemoon”

Jasmine — يسمين      “yasmeen”    (flower)

Jar —      جرة             “jireh”          (vase)

Almanac — المناخ      ” al-manakh”   ( the climate or the calender)

Algebra— الجابر         ” al- jaber”      a mathamician that discovered algebra!

Wow!! You really know your way through this whole Islamis Unit thing. I’ve heard about those words in class, but never actually knew what they were in the original Arabic form….so that was really cool:) How did you post Arabic words on??
